Philadelphia -------> Memphis

Jamar relocated to Memphis from Philly in the summer of 2016 for a job as the Development Lead for City Year Memphis. City Year helps to ensure off-track students are no longer being left behind but on track to graduate and reach their full potential. 

How did you get to Memphis?
Took a job with City Year Memphis overseeing development.

What was your impression of Memphis before you moved here? To be honest, I heard it was not a safe place, with not much entertainment.

What has surprised you about Memphis?
That the people are so warm and inviting. Hidden gems are everywhere.

What steps did you take to get involved?
Participated in St. Jude 5K Walk. Due to my role, I’ve met with many community leaders, foundations, and corporations. 

What has been your favorite New Memphis experience?
What I like most about Memphis is its people. They are so warm, inviting and willing to go out of their way to help you and make you feel apart of the family. 

What is your favorite local spot?
Alchemy. Ellwood’s BBQ Shack. Otherlands Coffee.

What is one thing you wish you had known when you first moved to Memphis?
It's cheaper to buy a house than rent here!

Based on your experience, what piece of advice would you offer newcomers?
Be open minded and the city will win you over.
