Beverly S.

New Orleans -------> Memphis

Though not a recent newcomer, she's an important one indeed. Beverly was chased out of New Orleans by Katrina, and chose the M as her home.

How did you get to Memphis?
Hurricane Katrina blew my family and I into Memphis, after being in NOLA for 18 years.

What was your impression of Memphis before you moved here? The only things I knew, Graceland and the National Civil Rights Museum, Memphis was always our halfway point on our annual Christmas trek from NOLA to Chicago.

What has surprised you about Memphis?
The wonderful resources and the warmth of Memphians.

What steps did you take to get involved?
Work; finding a job at the National Civil Rights Museum helped me settle in and feel at home.

What has been your favorite New Memphis experience?
Love walking along the river with my husband and our two girls (rescued dogs).

What is your favorite local spot?
The Asian Garden at the Botanic Gardens

What is one thing you wish you had known when you first moved to Memphis?
People here are so open and caring. The many nonprofits organizations exemplify that.

If you have lived here over 12 months- how has your perception changed over that time frame?
From a forced departure from NOLA, where it was hard to leave, to HOME. Since we’ve been here Memphis has become quite the food town. Love it.

Based on your experience, what piece of advice would you offer newcomers?
Be open to new experiences and people – soak it all in. Memphis is a great city!
